Patriot Brief
What Happened:A Florida condo board told a resident to remove her American flag from her window, calling it “art.” She refused, fought back, and won.
Why It Matters:HOAs often overreach, and the financial consequences for homeowners can be severe. This case shows why knowing your rights matters.
Bottom Line:State and federal law protect the right to display the U.S. flag. Danielle stood her ground, and the board backed down.
In a story that could only happen in modern America, a South Florida woman found herself in a showdown with her condo board for the unforgivable crime of… displaying an American flag.
Danielle Byrami’s home is filled with thousands of Disney pins, Lego dinosaurs, and her own architectural designs. None of that bothered her condo board. But the moment she hung Old Glory in her front door window, the board president fired off an email ordering her to remove it because their rules don’t allow “art” in the windows. Yes, they classified the American flag as art.
"They're asking me to take down a part of my soul."

Danielle didn’t hesitate. “I won’t take it down. It’s insane,” she told WSVN. She added that the flag is part of her identity and she had no intention of letting a condo board strip it away.
She contacted Help Me Howard, and the answer came quickly: she was right. The board was wrong. State and federal law protect her right to fly the American flag, no matter what a condo rulebook says. Faced with the law, the board immediately reversed course and admitted she could keep it.
This time, common sense won. But many homeowners aren’t so lucky. HOAs and condo boards often wield enormous power, and their fines can skyrocket into hundreds of dollars a day. Fights over paint colors, lawn height, or mailbox styles can end with liens, foreclosures, or massive legal bills.
Danielle had the law on her side. Florida statute and federal law both ensure her right to display the U.S. flag. She stood firm, and the board backed down.
A rare case where the little guy — and the American flag — actually won.
