What Happened: Nancy Pelosi claimed Trump incited January 6 and said he will be judged harshly by history.
Why It Matters: Pelosi’s comments highlight Democrats still fighting old battles as Trump governs again.
Bottom Line: Trump is back in office, while Pelosi is left promising future consequences that voters already rejected.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi resurfaced Sunday on ABC’s This Week to once again relitigate January 6, declaring that President Donald Trump will “pay a price in history” for what happened at the Capitol in 2021.
Speaking with host Jonathan Karl during a segment tied to an HBO documentary, Pelosi framed the events of January 6 as an “insurrection” personally incited by Trump and claimed lawmakers were left begging for help that never came.
“Well, it was clear that the president of the United States had incited an insurrection,” Pelosi said. She insisted congressional leaders pleaded for the National Guard, accusing Trump of lying about his response. “Typical of him, he never represents the truth,” she added. “He said, ‘Well, I was going to send them.’ Get out of here.”
Pelosi claimed even Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was calling for immediate action. “Even Mitch McConnell was on the phone with us, saying, ‘Get them here right away,’” she said.
She went on to argue that Trump is attempting to rewrite history, accusing him of pushing an alternate narrative that downplays the severity of the day. “What happened that day was horrible,” Pelosi said, calling it an assault on the Capitol, Congress, and the Constitution itself.
Karl pressed Pelosi on whether Trump has faced consequences. Her answer was telling.
“No, he’s president of the United States now,” Pelosi admitted. “But history will, he’ll pay a price in history.”
That remark landed with irony. Trump is back in the White House, won a second term, and continues to dominate American politics. Pelosi, meanwhile, is left offering historical warnings while watching the man she impeached twice reclaim the presidency and reshape Washington yet again.
